Project 05- Optimization of Demi-Hull Spacing in a Catamaran Using CFD

cfd

Overview
This project focused on enhancing the hydrodynamic efficiency of a catamaran through CFD-based optimization of the distance between its two demi-hulls. Precise hull spacing plays a critical role in reducing resistance and improving performance metrics such as speed, stability, and fuel consumption.

Approach
Using STAR-CCM+, multiple hull spacing configurations were simulated and analyzed to identify the setup that yielded the lowest total resistance while maintaining structural and operational balance.

Software & Tools

  • STAR-CCM+
  • Free surface flow modeling (VOF)
  • Parametric spacing analysis

Key Outcomes
✅ Optimal spacing identified for minimum drag
✅ Improved vessel speed and fuel efficiency
✅ Enhanced stability without compromising seakeeping
